Why don't people get help with their dog? The truth will surprise you.

The first thing that comes to mind is probably cost. Believe it or not, that's not the answer. When I ask people what kept them from training sooner, the primary answer was lack of confidence. The folks were afraid their dog would embarrass them, or they themselves, wouldn't know what to do.

Let me clear up a few things. The first clear up point is, we don't train good dogs. Good dogs never walk through our door. We only train dogs that have problems. Every dog that comes through the door has embarrassed their owners. Here, at the training center, we have a no blame, no shame policy. We know your dog is bad and embarrassing. That's why you are here.

The second thing to clear up is that being embarrassed by not knowing something, and having to get in front of people and do anything, is a universal fear in all of us. No one wants to look foolish. But check this out.... if you knew how to work with your dog, you wouldn't be here. Our job is to teach you. No matter how you learn, and no matter how long it takes, we will get you there. I have made sure that everything we teach is put into easy, understandable protocols. The simpler I can make it, the faster people can learn.

My job, as a dog trainer, is to teach your dog, and then show you, the owner, what to do. In addition, and probably most importantly, I am here to help you believe that you can do this; giving everyone the support, patience, and understanding they need to succeed.

Dog training is less about dogs, and more about people.

The big question is always, “why do you train do

The big question is always, “why do you train dogs?” The answer may surprise you.

Let me start off by saying, training dogs wasn't my first career choice. In fact, I had never even considered it. I have worked with dogs and animals my entire life. It is something that has always come easy to me. Several years ago when Olivia, then my best friend, now my wife, suggested I train dogs as a career, I really did LOL. I thought, “who in their right mind would pay me to train their dog?” Let me just say right now, Olivia was right and I was wrong.

In the beginning, I focused on teaching the dog everything I could, in the amount of time I had them. Let me just tell you, the dogs I was training were really good at their commands. After training, or during private sessions, I would “wow” the client with my brilliance and knowledge of dog behavior. It was super impressive. Well, to me any way.

After I had been training as a professional for a little while, I was puzzled by all of the call backs. How in the world were these dogs, that were good when they left, acting so bad? Why wasn't the owner, who I clearly educated about dog behavior, not just stepping in and doing what I taught them? I was sincerely puzzled.

As I began to listen, I mean really listen to the client, I discovered something really crucial. I was more concerned about the dog than I was about the client. It wasn't something I was doing on purpose, I just had the priorities reversed. That is when I learned the real reason for why I was doing all of this. It was about the people.

From that moment on, I made it all about the people. I realized that the more people I helped, the more dogs I helped. Most people will have multiple dogs in their life time. Helping them with one dog, helps them with every dog they will ever have. Everything we do here is all about the people. Now, not only do we turn out really good, well trained dogs, we also have clients that feel empowered to make the necessary changes at home, to live a more peaceful existence with their dog.

RIP Sadie 👎

What rough year. A few months ago we had to put down my retired K-9 Rambler. Today we had to put down his best bud Sadie. Sadie was about 17.

She was such a good dog and a good momma. She has raised 5 Dobermans and a Dutch Shepherd. Everyone knew she was the boss. She was that dog that would never leave the yard and never had to be on a leash.

I have been slacking on videos, but that’s changing!!

The folks in this video are from Illinois. Their pup is 4 years old and has exhibited this reactive behavior for most of the time. About a week ago, they came in for a consult and the dog bit me. Fortunately, they had a muzzle on him.

Today during their first session, I took the dog from barking his head off and lunging at me, to a calm state of mind.

After a short intro to E-Collar, we got right to work. What I taught the dog was, away from the owner was pressure, but next to the owner was peace. Dogs would rather not handle the big bad world. We just need them to know that we will handle it for them.

By the end of the session, the dog was walking around a room full of people dragging the leash.

Something very popular in the training world right

Something very popular in the training world right now is, if you are going to teach a dog to stop one behavior you need to teach an alternate behavior, or redirect. This isn't true for a lot of things.

If you have a dog stealing food from the counter, aggressively jumping on humans, barking constantly, knocking over the baby, tearing through the house, and on and on.. it just needs to stop.

I don't care what other behavior they go to, they just can't do those things. Just associate a negative that matters to the unwanted behaviors and end them. What you'll find is, it will be much easier to train the dog to do the things you want if you just end the unwanted behaviors first. Redirecting the dog to another behavior just makes us humans feel better about correcting the dog.

I'm sure this will get me some hate, but hear me out. There are some dogs that thrive in daycare. Their temperament is suited for chaos and constant pressure from other dogs.

Most dogs however are not wired this way. They may be ok for a little while, but after they have been jumped on 1000 times and they are tired, they act out. They use the only communication tool they have, their mouth, to make the pressure go away. Now they are labeled a fighter and get kicked out.

Know this, your dog is content just hanging out with their family. They definitely need play and exercise but most don't need or want daycare. We put them there because it makes us feel better about leaving them when we go to work. We put them there because we can only relate to them as we relate to human children. Human children need daycare and play with other children. Lots of other children. Dogs aren't programmed the same way.

The leash is the thing that ties you to the dog. I

The leash is the thing that ties you to the dog. It's the number one communication tool. The problem is, we generally create an unhealthy relationship between dog, leash, and owner. The leash, instead of being a communication tool, becomes a thing that means lose your mind because we are going somewhere. It means, when I clip this onto your collar pull as hard and fast as you can. It means, when you see a dog or human lose your mind pulling and barking.

The fix is pretty simple. Here is where you start. Put the leash on the dog and have it in your hand a lot! Especially in the house. I'm talking 5-6 hours a day. We want the dog to look at the leash as just another day at the office. The leash should become a neutral not something that causes extreme arousal. Remember, the leash is the only training tool that has gone relatively unchanged in centuries. There must be something to it!

The answer is simple. A dog's communication tool is its mouth. The order is usually, bark, growl, bite.

Bark is the warning at a distance. Growl is the warning when things are fairly close. The bite is then the thing is way to close and moving in.

Understand, your dog only wants to make things they don't understand go away. That is the reason for every action listed above. Be sure you advocate for your dog. Don't allow them to handle these situations on their own. Dogs will gladly allow you to protect them from the world.
