- Meet The Owner -
Terry Harris
Hello, I’m Terry Harris, founder of West Tennessee K9 Memphis and Nashville.
I have been working with and training animals my entire life. I cannot remember a time in my life when I was not training a dog for myself or someone else. To me, training dogs, or any animal for that matter, has always been incredibly easy. As I began to work with others though, I saw that the gift I had wasn’t normal. I have always taken my dogs with me everywhere. They have all been such an important part of my life.
I remember thinking, why doesn’t everyone do more with their
dogs. The answer to that question came to me about 17 years ago when I started really helping people train their dogs. What I discovered was, no matter how well they knew sit, down, etc. when you throw a few distractions in, all those commands meant nothing.
I learned that people were not taking their dogs places or even having people over because their dogs were embarrassing and out of control. Instantly, I was on mission to change that.
It was great that I could get dogs to do whatever I asked, but how could I transfer that understanding to every dog owner that needed help? After years of trial and error, I finally figured it out. They key was communication.
Without effective communication you couldn’t have change. With communication as a goal, I set out to develop an easy-to-follow program that anyone could do. The best part, it wouldn’t require any real dog training or animal behavior knowledge. It is so amazing to see people now living the life with their dog they envisioned. In the beginning, I would often get the statement, “my dog will do it for you but not for me”.
Now, with our proven system, no one says that anymore. The dog learns what to do and then our clients learn how to communicate effectively with the dog, and off they go to live an amazing, fulfilled life. This process works 100% of the time. The thousands of satisfied client and hundreds of reviews say so.
One of the main lessons I learned through creating this process is that training the dog is only a small contributor of success. The real transformation happens when we also focus on the dog’s owner and making sure that they understand how important their leadership role is in a dog’s life.
I believe that dogs were put on this earth to be our companions. There is no other animal that is so immediately attached to humans like a dog. We owe it to them to give them the best, most adventurous, complete, and healthy life possible.
